Bắc Sơn culture

The Bacson culture flourished from about 9000-5000 BC in the north of present-day Vietnam. It is a Neolithic culture that is known from about 50 localities (2004 ).

Discovery

The Bacson culture was discovered in the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Son in the twenties by French archaeologists Hemri Mansuy. He found rock shelters, which had been used by hunter-gatherers and are on the north bank of the Red River.

Characteristics

Characteristic of this culture are polished stone axes and flat stones that are decorated with a few parallel lines ( marques Bacsoniennes ). Food base were apparently freshwater mollusks and snails ( Cyclophorus sp.). The hunting of wild animals is also attested, but could crops not yet be assigned with certainty. There is evidence of the application of the pottery, which is occupied by rare finds of black and decorated with cord patterns vessels and therefore represents the oldest pottery in North Vietnam. In addition, they found a few stone and clay figurines.

The dead were buried within the settlements. As free gifts you gave sometimes seashell jewelry and stone tools and sowed it with ocher.
