Badidae

Bluefish ( Badis badis )

The Badis ( Badidae ) are a family of the order Anabantiformes. There are two genera, Badis from the lowlands of the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Mahanadi in India, Nepal and Bangladesh, from the area of the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, Southern Thailand and parts of the Mekong, and Dario from Northeast India, the north of Myanmar and the upper Irrawaddy in southern Yunnan (China).

Features

The species of the family are from 1.5 to 8 cm long, all species of the genus Badis are about 2.5 cm long, those of the genus Dario remain below 2.5 cm, making them the smallest known fish bass related. Badis are brownish, reddish or bluish color, their flanks and unpaired fins are often marked with a dot or stripe pattern. Badis can change color rapidly, leading to the English name led Chameleonfishes. The number of vertebrae is 24 to 30 The mouth is small and only slightly vorstülpbar. Its outer wings legs ( Ectopterygoid ) is toothless, the Vorkiemendeckel and infra orbitals have smooth edges. The dorsal fin is continuous.

  • Fins formula: Dorsal XIV-XVIII/5-11, Anal 0-V/5-11.

The eggs are completely surrounded by a sheath of fibers. The larvae have a unique, multi-cellular adhesive organ at the top of the yolk sac.

Way of life

Badis occur mainly in small bodies of water and are revier forming loner who defend their small territories combative. They feed on small invertebrates. The species of the genus Badis spawn, as far as already explored in caves or under overhangs. The 30 to 100 eggs and larvae hatching after about two to three days juveniles are guarded by the free-swimming after about a week by the male. The Dario species release their eggs between fine-leaved aquatic plants and operate no brood care.

System

In the past, the genus Badis was assigned to the Nanderbarschen ( Nandidae ). The second genus of the family, Dario, was not yet described. Based on morphological data were Badidae 1968 by Barlow et al. established only for Badis. Since the tail fin skeleton of both families but has characteristic features in common, a sister group relationship is also assumed. Badidae and Nandidae were usually assigned to the Perciformes, one in the original composition para- and polyphyletic grouping. As a close relative of the labyrinth fish ( Anabantoidei ) and snakeheads ( Channoidei ) they are now placed in the order Anabantiformes.
