Fionnay

Bagnes (German Bangis ) is a municipality in the district of Entremont in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. She is known by the ski resort of Verbier.

Geography

Bagnes is 282.2 km ² to Glarus Süd and Davos in terms of area, the third largest municipality in Switzerland and thus exactly as large as the Canton of Geneva, greater than the Cantons of Nidwalden, train, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Basel-Stadt. It consists of numerous villages and hamlets. A real village center there is not; the municipality is located in Le Chable. Only 1.9% of the community are built-up area, the largest part is mountainous area. The dam Lac de Mauvoisin is located in the municipality. The municipality is situated on the border with Italy and consists of the districts Bagnes, Bruson, Champsec, Cotterg, Fionnay, Le Chable, Les Morgnes, Lourtier, Médieres, Mauvoisin, Montagnier, Prarreyer, Sarreyer, Verbier, Versegères and Villette.

The neighboring municipalities are Vollèges, Sembrancher, Saxon VS, Riddes, Nendaz, Hérémence, Evolène, Italy, Bourg -Saint -Pierre, Liddes, Orsières.

Population

87.42 % speak French, Portuguese 3.76% and 2.72 % English. This reflects the tourism respectively the needed manpower.

Government

Bagnes has a Parliament, which is elected for a term of four years by proportional representation. Currently the parliament has 60 members, but should be reduced to 45. The current composition is 37 CVP, FDP 17 and 6 liberals.

The council consists of eleven members and is chosen equal to how Parliament. It consists of seven Christian Social, three Liberals and liberals.

Economy

The economy is strongly influenced by tourism. Most Bagner work in the village. Agriculture employs 11 % of the workforce, trade 28% and the services sector 61%.

Traffic

  • In Val Bagnes the Sentier des Chamois runs.
  • Bagnes is at the end of a road to Sembrancher. Verbier can be reached from La Chable from.
  • In the district of La Chable is the terminal station of Martigny- Orsières -Bahn (MO) - now part of the Transports de Martigny et régions ( TMR). It combines the one hand and on the other hand Bagnes Orsières with Martigny on the Simplon line.
