Bagrat Shinkuba

Bagrat Schin Cuba ( Abkhaz Баграт Уасыл - иҧа Шьынқәба; Russian Баграт Васильевич Шинкуба; born May 12, 1917 in Tschlou; † 25 February 2004 in Sukhum ) was a Soviet- Abkhaz writer, poet, linguist, historian and politician.

Life

Bagrat Schin Cuba was born in 1917 in the Abkhazian village Tschlou. He studied until 1939 at the Pedagogical Institute Sukhumi. He then worked as a writer, historian and linguist and was also active politically. He joined the CPSU in 1946. From 1950 he published his first novels.

He conducted research in addition among other things about the history and languages ​​of the Northwest Caucasian peoples, including Abkhaz, Circassians, Abasinen and the lost in the 20th century Ubychen belong. He was also active as a writer from the start. The fate of the Ubychen he sat in his novel The Sign of the Crescent a literary monument.

From 1958 to 1979 he was Chairman of the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Abkhaz ASSR.

In the Soviet Union Schin Cuba has won several awards. He received the Order of Lenin twice, in 1987 he was also awarded the honorary title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

Schin Cuba died in the Abkhaz capital Sukhum 2004.
