The origin of today's Bahamasair is founded in 1936 in Nassau Bahamas Airways Ltd.. After Pan Am bought the British BOAC. In addition, involved the Swire Group. Liquidated in 1970 because of political intrigues, the Swire Group, the Bahamas Airways. Parallel existed in 1971, founded Flamingo Airways, and the successful Out Iceland Airways, which took over the northern routes. 1973 earned the government's Out Iceland Airways far below market value, they organized new and named it Bahamasair. She drives mainly through management mistakes losses year after year. The Bahamasair was established because of the oil crisis in the 1970s. In 1970, a British Airways flight to the Bahamas and the government feared that further large airlines would follow suit. So Bahamasair was established and began on 18 June 1971, scheduled service with aircraft that were purchased from the stock of Flamingo Airlines and Out Iceland Airways. In the initial phase Bahamasair was confronted with major problems such as poor maintenance and a difficult economic situation.

This resulted in a large distrust of the young airline, which, however, began to disappear, as the airline brand-new Boeing 737 received. In 1972, the first international route was established to Tampa. In 1973, the fear of the government was then reality when Pan Am and some other airlines followed the example of British Airways and einstellten their scheduled service to the Bahamas. Thus, the Bahamasair received a dominant role on the Bahamian market and served more routes to Florida.

During the 80 years Bahamasair tried to expand in the northeastern USA, for flights to Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Newark were established. 1989, however, decided the manager of the airline routes set these again because they were unprofitable. 1989 two new Boeing 727 were integrated into the fleet, and changed the design of the aircraft and the uniforms.

1991 De Havilland Canada DHC -8 was introduced to replace the jet aircraft of the airline. 1997 returned the Boeing 737 but returned to service international routes to Florida.
