Băile Olănești

Băile Olăneşti is a small town and a resort town in the district of Vâlcea in Wallachia region of Romania.

Location

Băile Olăneşti is located on the south side of the Capatana Mountains, a part of the Transylvanian Alps. The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 15 km south-east.

History

The first mention of Băile Olăneşti dates back to 1527th Since at least 1760 the healing powers of the springs above the town is known. 1821 fled several Wallachian nobles before the revolutionaries under Tudor Vladimirescu in the place. 1830 analyzed the physician Karl Friedrich Siller first time the composition of the thermal waters; then the cure began with combined bathing and drinking cures. 1835 already passed five heated guest rooms for up to 30 spa guests. 1854 Indications for each mineral source were created based on new analyzes. The waters were awarded at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna. In 1877 there were three hotels. The season took time from 20 May until 15 September. A flood destroyed in 1895 virtually all health establishments; the operation was not until 1904 resumed. From 1905 to 1912 a sanatorium was built. 1915 were about 2,000 spa guests annually over the place. 1933/1934 mineral waters were temporarily filled in Băile Olăneşti and sold in Bucharest. In 1953, the place the status of a city. Since then, there is year-round Kurbetrieb in Băile Olăneşti. After the Second World War Băile Olăneşti was further expanded schedule in the then Communist Romania; 1983 registered you 40,000 Spa guests. As of 1974, the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in Băile Olăneşti he built a villa for his wife Elena. Even after the Romanian Revolution of 1989, tourism is the main industry of the city.

Population

1930 lived on the territory of today's approximately 3,050 residents, including about 50 Roma; the rest were Romanians. As of the 2002 census, 4,610 inhabitants were counted in Băile Olăneşti, including 4,565 Romanians and 36 Roma. Approximately 1,800 lived in the district of Livadia - the center of the health resort - 1,500 in the district Olăneşti, the other about 1,300 in the six other local villages.

Traffic

Băile Olăneşti has no rail connection. There are regular bus services to many major cities in the country.
