Bajuni people

The Bajuni ( proper name Wabajuni, also Italian Bagiuni or Germanized Badschuni written ) are an ethnic minority in the large majority inhabited by Somali Somalia. They are of mixed Arab, Somali and Bantu and possibly of Malay origin and belong to the Swahili company which is a resident to the north of Mozambique on the East African coast from southern Somalia.

Information on the number of Bajuni range from 3,000-4,000 to 11,000.

The Bajuni live in the far south of Somalia to the city of Kismayo, whose foundation is attributed to them, and on the upstream Bajuni Islands. Some also live in Baraawe and Mogadishu. Their language is Kibajuni, a dialect of Swahili. Many also speak the Somali language, most of them are Muslims. Many Bajuni living from fishing.

Under the rule of Siad Barre, the Bajuni from 1974 state fishing cooperatives had to connect. These cooperatives were controlled by persons of the Somali clans of Marehan, Majerteen and Dhulbahante - Darod, which themselves have no fishing tradition, but as boats and other equipment of Bajuni appropriated. The inhabited by the Bajuni coast was affected by the tsunami on 26 December 2004.
