The volcano Bakening (Russian Бакенинг; occasionally Bakenin ) is a stratovolcano and is located just west of the eastern chain of volcanoes of Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia about 100 kilometers north- north-west of Petropavlovsk -Kamchatsky.

A large part of the volcano arose in the Pleistocene. Located on the north and north-east flank some dacitic lava domes, with the youngest ( Novo- Bakening, Russian for "New Bakening " ) was 9000-10000 years ago. A horseshoe-shaped indentation on the southeastern edge is the result of a debris avalanche, which broke away 8000-8500 years ago and spilled an area up to a distance of 11 kilometers to the east and south of the volcano. Two rivers to the east and northeast were dammed and there arose two lakes. There are several cinder cones on the northern and southern flanks.

Some eruptions of the volcano can be dated on the basis of Tephrochronologie the following years: 7550 ± 500 BC ( emissions of 1.5 ± 0.5 cubic kilometers of lava), 6550 ± 500 BC ( output of 10 million cubic meters of tephra ), 6300 ± 300 BC, about 1550 BC and about 550 BC ( output of 2 million cubic meters of tephra ).
