Balat (Istanbul)

Balat is a neighborhood in Istanbul's Fatih.

Name

The name derives from the Greek word Palation, which translated into German means palace.

History

Balat has long been inhabited mainly by Sephardic Jews. After the establishment of Israel in 1947, most of them emigrated to their new home. Today Kurds, Turks from Anatolia and many Roma are the people who came after the 1970s from Thrace, Anatolia, Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia and found in Balat their new home.
