Balbina Herrera

Balbina Del Carmen Herrera Araúz (* November 24, 1954 in Panama City, Panama ) is a Panamanian politician and was a candidate in the presidential elections in May 2009.

Background and education

After her schooling Herrera studied at the National Institute and at the University of Panama. It achieved a Bachelor in Agricultural Science. She studied further after their undergraduate education. Her political career began Herrera as a member of Panamanian Student Federation. In 1973 she was a member of the Partido Revolucionario Democrático. In the 1980s she worked for Manuel Noriega.

Presidential nomination in 2009

In May 2009 she was a presidential candidate for the governing Partido Revolucionario Democrático ( PRD). She lost on May 3, 2009, presidential election with 37 percent of the vote against the politician Ricardo Martinelli.
