Balboa Island Ferry

The Balboa Iceland Ferry is a ferry in Newport Beach in the U.S. state of California.

The ferries operate in a dense clock between Balboa Peninsula and Balboa Iceland. The distance by the Newport Bay amounts to approximately 300 meters. The two piers are located on the East Bay Avenue opposite the historic Balboa Pavilion and on the South Bayfront on the island.

History

Located in the Newport Bay Balboa Iceland developed from the 1890s by a trade hub to a residential area. The island was quickly settled and finally incorporated in 1916 to Newport Beach. Three years later, received Joseph Beek, a well-known Californian politician, the rights to operate a ferry service. The original ship The Ark wrong initially as needed.

From 1919 to 1953, the crossing cost a nickel. In the 1950s, replaced three wooden ferries with the name Admiral, Captain and Commodore the previous model. The three ferries are still in operation today, they can each carry up to three cars and have a length of 19.5 meters. Up to 1.5 million passengers per year use the Balboa Ferry Iceland for a crossing.
