Baltschug (Russian Балчуг ), also Bolotni Island (Russian Болотный остров, German "Swamp Island" ) is an island in the Moscow River, which belongs to the center of Moscow.

Geography

Baltschug is formed by the Moskva River and the water diversion channel, an oxbow lake of the Moscow River. The island lying opposite the Kremlin has a curved shape and is about 4 kilometers long and 280 meters wide. It is one of the districts Samoskworetschje and Yakimanka in the Central Administrative District, the border is formed by the ulitsa Baltschug.

History

Baltschug was created by the construction of the water diversion channel 1783-1786. The channel should prevent at high tide, the area of the island is flooded so that it can be used as building land. Nevertheless, there were some floods in the 19th and 20th centuries. The worst was the one in 1908, where the water level rose by 9 meters and flooded large parts of the city. Only the regulation of the Moskva River with the help of the 1937 Moscow -Volga Canal opened could prevent further flooding.

Before 1938, was located in present-day course of Krasnocholmski bridges, a channel that separated the southern tip of the district Krasnocholm ( German " Red Hill " ) from the rest of the island.

Attractions

On the island there are several important buildings, such as the House on the Embankment, the 5-star Kempinski Hotel Baltschug, the former manufacturing building the chocolate factory Red October. Before the western tip of Baltschug is located on a man made island the monument to Peter the Great.

Baltschug is associated with several bridges across the Moskva River and the water diversion channel to the mainland. The most important are the two Stone bridges, the two Moskva River Bridge, the two Ustinski bridges and the two Krasnocholmski bridges. The Patriarch Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that leads from the Christ the Savior Cathedral on the island on the banks of the festlandseitge water diversion channel.

The Bolotnaya Square is a Park in the western part of the island.
