Baldwin of Ibelin

Baldwin of Ibelin, also called Baldwin ( III.) of Ramla, ( * before 1136; † around 1187 ) was lord of Ramla and an important person in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

He was a son of Barisan of Ibelin and brother of Hugh of Ibelin. After his brother's death, he took over in 1170 the rule Ramla. The castle and lordship Ibelin he left shortly after his younger brother Balian. Baldwin and Balian supported Count Raymond III. Tripoli against Miles of Plancy as regent for Baldwin IV Baldwin's daughter Eschiva married around 1174 later King of Jerusalem and Cyprus, Amalric of Lusignan.

1177 the brothers took part in the victorious battle of Montgisard. 1179 Baldwin fell in battle at the ford of the Jordan Jacob daughters into captivity, from the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Comnenus was ransomed him. After his release in 1180 he traveled to Constantinople Opel, where he witnessed the death of the Emperor.

In 1183 he supported Raymond against Guy of Lusignan, the husband Sibylles and regent for the ailing Baldwin IV Baldwin of Ibelin was also among the barons who advised the king in the same year to be crowned her son Baldwin V during his lifetime, to Guido's successor to prevent as king. Baldwin IV died in 1185, Baldwin V the following year, and as Raymond's favorite to succeed, Humphrey IV of Toron, the crown turned down and turned on Guido's side, Baldwin refused to swear allegiance to this. He transferred his dominions Ramla and Mirabel his young son Thomas of Ibelin († 1188 ), so that this, when he was old enough, may afford king Guido the homage which he refused. He then went into exile in Antioch, where he received a large fief IV by Prince Bohemond.

According to the Chronicle of Ernoul, an Old French Continuation of the chronicle of William of Tyre, who comes from a writer of Baldwin brother Balian, Baldwin did dislike Guido therefore, that he himself wanted to marry Sibyl 1180. However, the Ibelin family was not as significant as the Lusignan family, and Baldwin failed with his desire. He refused to return to Jerusalem to assist Guido against Saladin. King Guy was defeated in 1187 in the disastrous Battle of Hattin in consequence also Ramla, Mirabel and Ibelin were conquered by the Muslims under Saladin.

He probably died in 1187 in self-imposed exile.
