Balfarg

Balfarg and Balbirnie seem to belong together prehistoric burial and ritual sites. They were, prior to the installation of the system of Balbirnie, west of the A92 from Glenrothes to Dundee only about 200 meters apart in the Scottish county of Fife.

Balfarg

Balfarg is one of the few Henges of Scotland, which was excavated and provided valuable information. The Henge is now completely surrounded by a modern housing development. Aerial photographs showed an almost completely backfilled trench of about 60 m in diameter, which extended on three sides in an arc. On the south side was a natural, filled by soil erosion gorge. At the time of the archaeological excavations in the years 1977 and 1978 there were only two standing stones. In the center is a plate that was as capstone of the tomb of a younger male, buried with grave goods person identified. The investigation showed that the place 2900-1400 was used mehrperiodig BC. Circles of beams and posts and a ring of stones were detected.

It was apparently at first a flat platform diameter of over 60 meters within a circle, which was perhaps not yet marked by a ditch. This shows the burning of wood and bone and a series of fragments of large pots, which were found. A short time later, 16 different high wooden posts were erected weighing up to five tonnes in the middle of the platform. The course of a circle is today marked by low post.

Balbirnie

Nearby ( 56 ° 12 ' 50 "N, 3 ° 9 ' 11 " W56.213916 - 3.152996 ) is composed of the once 10 stones slightly oval circle of Balbirnie. He has 15 m in diameter and encloses a large and several small later introduced rectangular stone structures, the Stones of Stenness are similar to those of Carnapple in West Lothian and Orkney.

It seems that the two monuments were created at about the same time, but Balbirnie was apparently used for longer than Balfarg.
