Balthasar Báthory

Balthasar Báthory (Hungarian Boldizsár Báthory, * 1560; ? † September 11, 1594 in Szamosújvár ) was like his brother Andrew Báthory an opponent of the Habsburgs in Transylvania.

Both grew up in the Polish royal court. Boldizsár was in 1588 member of the Council of Sigismund Báthory of Transylvania, under later Sándor Kendi gradually dissidents and opponents of the attacks on the Turks. Sigismund Báthorys jealousy and antagonism to his talented relatives Boldizsár Báthory led in 1590 to the fact that Transylvania its negative fate - favored by secret Habsburgische Listigkeiten - was approaching.

In May of 1594, erupted as violent oppositions in the parliament, while Sigismund Báthory transferred the government to Boldizsár, took power, however, in August of the same year back in again. Sigismund was persuaded by the papal emissary Alfonz Carillo, to ally themselves with Emperor Rudolf and attack the Turks. In the meeting of Parliament on August Csíkszék, Udvarhely and Háromszék voted against the repeal of peace with the Turks, which the Szász, Székely and the castle communities wanted. The councilors were hostile to the cause. Sigismund recognized these decisions and took the main opposition nobles firmly so also Boldizsár Báthory, and let them György Ravazdi, the lord of the castle of Szamosújvár, strangled in prison. ( Ravazdi was later lynched by the Székely. )
