Life

Dvarionas, who came from a musical family (his father was an organist and instrument maker, a sister, a famous soprano ), received in Lithuania first piano and music theory lessons. In 1920 he moved to Leipzig at the Conservatory to study piano and composition (including with Sigfrid Karg -Elert ). After completing his studies in 1924 he took 1925/26, studies piano with Egon Petri at the Berlin Academy of Music. Then he returned to Lithuania and gave concerts in addition to piano lessons at the music school in Kaunas, the conservatory was later.

While working as a pianist gradually internationally concerted, Dvarionas began in 1931, also to act as a conductor in appearance. For a time he conducted the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Kaunas. In 1939 he took again at the Leipzig Conservatory conducting with Hermann Abendroth. He campaigned for the establishment of the Municipal Symphony Orchestra Vilnius, soon with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Kaunas to the Lithuanian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra: was pooled (now Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra ). Dvarionas received, among other things, the Stalin Prize in 1948 for his Violin Concerto, and in 1964 the Order of Lenin.

Tonal language

Dvarionas was a conservative through and through composer. His works are based largely on a late-Romantic musical language. Every now and then he played with impressionistic sound effects. A crucial role is played in his oeuvre, a folk music of Lithuania, which gives his style a Nordic- elegiac tendency. Dvarionas maintained a very melodic style of composition is committed to the tonality. His musical traditional attitude brought with it that he in the Soviet Union had no problems with the specifications of the desired state Socialist Realism after the recording of Lithuania. The subjects of some vocal works also clearly show that he did comply with the official requirements. Dvarionas is the most important Lithuanian composer of his generation.
