Bamboccianti

Bambocciade (Italian bambocciata ) was originally a derogatory term for a style of genre painting from Rome.

The first is not very large format Bambocciade - pictures that deal in a very rough way scenes from the life of the people and the "noble" Baroque classicism of the time oppose figures of beggars, vagrants and small craftsmen who came from the Dutch painter Pieter van Laer. Van Laer lived and worked in Rome and was - the legend - because of his appearance " Bamboccio " ( rag doll ) called.

During his stay in Rome, a group of painters gathered around him, the " Bamboccianti " called themselves. Important role model for the group was next to van Laer Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

Van Laers style of painting goes back to a long tradition can be brought, among other things in connection with Hieronymus Bosch, Adriaen van Ostade, David Ryckaert, David Teniers the Younger and David Teniers the Elder.
