Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Banana is a port city in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It lies north of the mouth of the Congo on the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 20 km south of the town is the border with Angola, behind the Angolan Soyo. The city belongs to the Banana administrative unit Bas -Congo. It is one of the oldest residential areas of the Congo.

In the 19th century, the city developed under Belgian rule an important location for the slave trade. In particular, the harbor areas in this context were of great importance. By 1960, Banana was one of the main points of the Belgian Navy.

Philatelists Banana is mainly thanks to the Taubenpost line Banana Boma from 1905 a term. In the 1900s there was a separate pigeon post between Boma, the then capital of the Belgian Congo, and the port city of Banana. At that time, the telegraph network of the Congo was still under construction. The first telegraph line Banana - Boma - Leopoldville - Coquilhatville was completed in 1905 only partially. Therefore, the Belgian government decided to set up a provisional Taubenpost line that existed until the opening of the remaining sections towards the end of the decade.
