The BSI SA is the oldest bank in the canton of Ticino. The banking institution founded in Lugano as Banca della Svizzera Italiana in 1873 belongs since 1998 to the Italian insurance group Generali completely and focuses its business on private banking and asset management.

As an internationally active bank BSI SA is represented by a network of 31 offices and subsidiaries in Europe, the Far East and Central and South America. The company employs 2'353 employees at the end of 2008 and reported assets under management of around EUR 94 billion Swiss francs.

After the BSI SA, also based in Lugano Banca Unione di Credito adopted in August 2006 and fully integrated, they announced in November 2007 to the complete takeover of Banca del Gottardo. The full integration of Banca del Gottardo was completed by mid-2008.
