Band cup

The lips of the strip shells are black and slightly concave. At the joint between the shell body and Schalenfuß there is often a red ring. The outer figure decorating can be found in the handle, usually sandwiched between palmettes. Interior pictures are rare in this type of tray, as well as inscriptions. Only very few copies are completely black except for a few figure drawings in the handle area. Also, very few pieces that are attributed to the radius of the Andokides, have figure drawings on to the flat bottom of the bowl foot.

It is unknown why band - edge and shells as long coexisted. Perhaps both versions had their advantages. So it was certainly more pleasant to drink from an undecorated black border a band shell, it caused a sharp ridge below the lip of the rim shells that here the wine drinking could not so easily spill over. More difficult in the preparation were the edge bowls.

Well-known artists of this shell species are Hermogenes, Glaukytes, the Centaur Painter, Neandros, Sokles and the Oakeshott Painter.
