Bandon Bay

The Bay of Bandon ( อ่าว บ้าน ดอน - Ao Ban Don ) is a bay in the Gulf of Thailand in the province of Surat Thani. It is named after the city of Surat Thani, which was called until 1915 Ban Don.

The bay extends from Sui cape ( แหลม ซุย ) in Amphoe Chaiya ( Chaiya district ) in the north- west to the Amphoe Kanchanadit ( Kanchanadit district ) in the east. The whole coastline is approximately 100 kilometers.

In the bay the estuaries of the rivers ( Maenam ) Tapi and Phum Duang lie. It is relatively shallow, with water depths of between one and five meters. Along the coasts there because of the high sedimentation a Wadden Sea, the mangrove ( Sonneratia spp., Rhizophora spp.) Was covered. Today, shrimp farms have the natural mangrove forests largely displaced.
