Banteay Samré

Banteay Samré (Khmer ប្រាសាទបន្ទាយសំរែ ) is a Khmer temple in the central Angkorgebiet ( Cambodia). For German, the name means " fortress of the Samré " - the Samré to have been a local tribe.

History

Banteay Samré similar in many respects Prasat Hin Phimai in Thailand today: Both shrines are classic representatives of the Angkor Wat period, each easily identifiable by the bud-shaped roof structure, both of which were built in the first half of the 12th century. Banteay Samré shows a predominantly Hindu imagery, the central temple tower ( Prasat ), unusually, but also reliefs of Buddhist policy group. Prasat Hin Phimai also has a mix of Hindu and Buddhist iconography. With Banteay Samré was, according to the so-called "discovery" of Angkor in the 19th century and after the successful reconstruction of the original private emphasizes small temple of Banteay Srei ( 1931-1936 ), the first time a complete temple reconstructed using the Anastylosis Method ( 1936 - 1945). Head of this reconstruction was the French architect and scientist Maurice Glaize.

Location, architecture and architectural decoration

Banteay Samré is off the beaten tourist paths about 500 m east of Pradak, a village located in the dry Eastern Baray and in which the descendants of the Samré to live. Thus, the temple is located about halfway between the Roluos group in the south and the temple of Banteay Srei in the north.

The architecture of the temple is similar to other smaller flat temples the same time, namely Prasat Hin Phimai, but also the Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda. All parts of the plant are 120 cm high, puckered sockets. From outside to inside can be found:

  • The outer gallery (83 m × 77 m ), each with a relief- decorated gateway ( gopura ) in the south, west and north and the east Torpavillon
  • The inner wall (44 m × 38 m ) with four relief- decorated gates
  • The courtyard with two "Libraries " on the left and right of the leading east-west main road
