Bao Zunxin

Bao Zunxin (Chinese包 遵 信, Pinyin Bao Zūnxìn, W.-G. Pao Tsun -hsin ) (* September 1937; † 28 October 2007) was a Chinese historian and dissident who due to his participation in the protests at Tiananmen Place was arrested.

Biography

Bao graduated in 1964 at the University of Beijing. He worked at the Faculty of History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and taught at Beijing Normal University.

Bao supported pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989 at Tiananmen Square. He signed a petition, which postulated that China would still ruled by an emperor. The petition used the term emperor as a synonym for the Chairman of the Communist Party of China, Deng Xiaoping.

After the massacre at Tiananmen Square Bao was arrested and accused of counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement. To support the pro-democracy movement Bao was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, of which he was serving three and a half years until his release in 1992.

Bao died on 28 October 2007 at the age of 70 of a cerebral hemorrhage.
