Bárbara Dührkop Dührkop

Bárbara Dührkop Dührkop ( born July 27, 1945 in Hannover) is a Spanish politician of the Socialist Workers Party ( PSOE) and from 1987 to 2009 Member of the European Parliament, most recently as Vice President of the PES Group.

Education and personal life

After her high school degree at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Uppsala in 1971 Bárbara Dührkop went to Hamburg and as a lecturer at the University of Erlangen -Nuremberg. In 1978 she was a language teacher at the Instituto Usandizaga and at the German School in San Sebastian, where they took over the presidency in 1995.

Her husband Enrique Casas, who was for the upcoming election since 1980 Member of the PSOE in the Basque Parliament and top candidate of the PSOE, was murdered on 23 February 1984 by the ETA.

Political career

She became a member of the Executive Board of the Socialist Party of the Basque Country in 1999.

Since 1987 Dührkop was a member of the European Parliament, where she was Coordinator for the PES Group in the Committee on Culture and Education 1989-1994. After that, she held the position of deputy chairman of the Budget Committee until 1999. At the 2009 European election Dührkop occurred on the last place of the PSOE list so she has since no longer belongs to Parliament.
