Barbara Zápolya

Barbara Zápolya (* 1495, † October 2, 1515 in Kraków ) was from 1512 by marriage Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania. She came from out of the Hungarian noble family of Zápolya.

Life

Barbara was the daughter of the Hungarian Voivode Stephen Zápolya and its Silesian wife Hedwig von Teschen (1469-1521), daughter of Przemysław II (1420-1477), Duke of Teschen, was born.

On February 28, 1512, she married in Krakow the Polish King Sigismund I and was crowned in the Wawel Cathedral, Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania.

In May 1513, Barbara gave birth to her first daughter in Poznan, Hedwig, who was married in 1535 with Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg.

Barbara lived most of the time alone in Vilnius, since her husband, as Grand Duke of Lithuania, most of the time (1512-1522) was at war against the Grand Duchy of Moscow. In 1515 she gave birth to another daughter, Anna, who, however, died soon after birth. Barbara died on October 2, 1515 from the effects of childbirth.

Queen Barbara was buried in the Wawel Cathedral.
