Bareilly (Hindi: बरेली, Urdu: باریلی; Bareli [ bʌre ː li] ) is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with about 900,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the capital of the district of Bareilly and the Rohilkhand Division.

Bareilly lies on the river Ramganga at an average altitude of 165 meters above sea level. The city was founded in 1537 and built in much of the 17th century under the Mughal governor Makrand Ray. It was later the capital of the Bareilly Rohillas, an immigrant communities who brought the surrounding area under his control. 1774 conquered the ruler of Avadh with the help of the British territory; the city was ceded to the British in 1801.

Bareilly is a center of furniture production and trade in cotton, grain, and sugar. In Bareilly industrial center Parsakhera is among others the Saraswati Camphor Factory, one of the largest producers of camphor in Asia, a resident.
