Barium, the barium salt of acetic acid.

Production

Barium acetate can be represented by the reaction of barium carbonate or barium with acetic acid.

Properties

Barium acetate exists in three different crystal structures: below 24.7 ° C as the trihydrate ( CH3COO ) 2Ba · 3 H2O in the monoclinic crystal system, between 24.7 ° C and 41 ° C as the monohydrate ( CH3COO ) 2Ba · H2O in the triclinic crystal system and above of 41 ° C in the form of the anhydrous salt. The latter crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system, space group I41 / a with lattice parameters a = 990.1 pm and b = 2736.2 pm. In the unit cell contains 16 formula units. The crystals of the anhydrate is not hygroscopic. The solubility curve has in the transformation points clear kinks.

The standard enthalpy of barium is -1486 kJ / mol.
