Barium is a barium salt of chromic acid. It has the formula BaCrO4 and belongs to the group of substances chromates.
Extraction / representation
The yellow barium chromate is obtained by precipitation of barium chromate with from slightly acidic solution.
Properties
Barium chromate is a yellow solid, which is poorly soluble in water. As with all chromates also acts barium chromate oxidizing. It shows the typical for barium green flame coloration. In contrast to most other chromates it is not toxic, so that the safety of chromates not apply to barium.
When heated with barium carbonate, the hexavalent chromium is reduced to the pentavalent, it forms barium chromate (V ) Ba3 ( CrO4 ) 2
Use
Barium is used in the glass and coatings industry as pigment. In pyrotechnics barium is used as the oxidizing agent and the green color.
