Barium is a chemical compound of the elements chlorine, oxygen, and barium of the formula Ba ( ClO4 ) 2 * 3 H2O. It is the barium salt of perchloric acid.
Representation
Barium can be obtained by salt-forming reaction of barium hydroxide, and perchloric acid.
It can also be produced by calcining a mixture of barium chlorate and barium.
Properties
It crystallizes as a colorless trihydrate in the hexagonal crystal system, the crystals are isomorphous to lithium perchlorate. 2 moles of crystal water are readily released when standing over concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature, the anhydrate, however, arises only at about 100 ° C. It melts at 505 ° C, but starting at 460 ° C the decomposition to barium chloride and oxygen begins.
Dangerousness
Barium is toxic to the human body and can explode on contact with organic substances.
Use
It is used as an oxidant for gas drying, for ribonuclease and determination in water analysis for sulfate titration with Thorin as indicator.
