Barnafossar

The Barnafoss (Eng. "Children waterfall ") is a waterfall of the river Hvítá near the village Húsafell. It is located in the municipality of Borgarbyggð.

Name

The name refers to an old legend Barnafoss. When the inhabitants of the farm Hraunsás went to Christmas Mass, they left behind two children. When they returned, the children were gone, but their trail led to the river. They should be crashed by a natural stone arch, fell into the river and drowned Hvítá. Then, the mother left the stone arch destroy, so that a similar tragedy can not happen again.

Geography

The Barnafoss located in the immediate vicinity of the Hraunfossar, north of the Ok volcano and south of the Hallmundarhraun.

Interestingly, the water nozzle is in the waterfall: A large part of the water shoots with remarkable speed through a hole. It formed considerably roaring rapids.

About the foaming river Hvítá in the small canyon leads a footbridge. From this one can very well overlook the waterfall and the Hraunfossar.
