Barneville-Carteret

Barneville -Carteret is a commune with 2290 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It was created in 1965 by the merger of two previously independent municipalities Barneville -sur -Mer and Carteret.

Barneville -Carteret is located on the French coast in the west of the Cotentin Peninsula, opposite the islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Sark and Alderney.

History

On the Cape Carteret is the ruins of the old church of Saint- Germain. The church is said to have formed the nucleus of the original settlement, but was further moved inland later because of the encroachment of the dunes.

Traffic

From the port of Carteret connect several ferry daily to the Channel Islands with mainland France. Carteret is also one of the two terminal stations of the tourist train Train Touristique du Cotentin, a partial route of the former railway line Carteret Carentan. The 9 km long route runs along part of the coastal landscape over the islands in the English Channel to Portbail. This museum railway is therefore also called Train de la Côte des Isles.
