Baron Braye

Baron Braye is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England.

The family seat is Stanford Hall near Lutterworth, Leicestershire.

Award

The barony was created in 1529 for Edmund Braye.

As with many ancient baronies of the Peerage of England, the creation was not by appointment of a person to Peer ( letters patent ), but by the fact that the person was asked to take a seat in the upper house ( writ of summons ). A special feature of these baronies by writ is that they can also be inherited in the female line, if no children are present. However applies between several sisters - unlike brothers - not the principle of primogeniture. Since the title can not be shared or held in common but the title then rests, but if no sons, several daughters there. Everyone can then jointly entitled to request the termination of the suspension at the crown.

This is what happened in the case of the Barony Braye: Already the second Baron Braye left at his death in 1557 no children or brothers but only six sisters, between which the Barony fell into Abeyance. In this state it remained until 1839 a descendant of one of these daughters petitioned the barony of Braye with success and third Baroness Braye was. After her death in 1862 the barony fell again in Abeyance, but was in 1879 was revived again after a successful petition. From then on it remained to this day exist.

The current title holder has no children. The next contenders are two granddaughters of the fifth Baron, as they are older. A new Abeyance is therefore likely.
