Baron of Dunsany

Baron of Dunsany is a hereditary Irish peerage in the Peerage of Ireland, which is run by the family Plunkett.

Ancestral home of the family is Dunsany Castle, County Meath in the Republic of Ireland. It involves probably has the longest continuously inhabited building in Ireland.

Award

The Barony is one of the oldest existing title in the Peerage of Ireland. The award was presented to Sir Christopher Plunkett, the second son of Christopher Plunkett, 1st Baron Killeen. The exact year of the award is not known. Probably the title was created in 1462, shortly before the death of the first Baron.

The eleventh Baron lost his title after he had placed himself on the side of King James II during the Glorious Revolution, but was reinstated in his rights and possessions after the Treaty of Limerick again. However, not until the thirteenth Baron initiated the necessary steps in order to take the seat in the Irish House of Lords again can.
