Baron Redesdale

Baron Redesdale, of Redesdale in the County of Northumberland, is a British hereditary title of nobility, which was created twice in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is now run by the family of Mitford.

Ceremonies

The title was first created in 1802 for the politician Sir John Freeman - Mitford. This was 1801 /02, Speaker of the House of Commons, having previously held the office of Attorney General. The title became extinct in 1886 with the death of the second Baron, who was previously raised to the Earl of Redesdale.

The second ceremony took place in 1902 at the dignity of a distant cousin, Algernon Freeman - Mitford. This had long been in the diplomatic service and had then worked in the royal building administration responsible position.

More titles

The second Baron of the first ceremony, the Chairman of several committees in the House of Lords was, 1877 was elevated to Earl of Redesdale. Also, this title became extinct with his death.

The current Baron has been raised to life peer in 2000 as Baron Mitford, of Redesdale in the County of Northumberland, so that he continues to have a seat and vote in the House of Lords.
