Barra Grande Hydroelectric Power Plant

The 185 -meter-high Barra Grande dam [ ˌ ba ː χɐ ɡɾãd͡ʒi ] is a 2006 newly built dam with a hydroelectric plant in Brazil. It stands on the Rio Pelotas on the border between the Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The nearest towns are Anita Garibaldi (SC) and Pinhal da Serra (RS).

In July 2005, the operating license was granted and the reservoir was filled in 2005 for the first time. For the 94 -acre reservoir 561 families have been resettled and 959 families will be compensated.

The dam has a large spillway with six holes.

The first of three turbines of the hydroelectric plant went into operation in November 2005, the second in February 2006 and the last in May 2006. Each has a rated output of 236 MW, 708 MW together. The total power is 690 MW. For operator consortium Barra Grande Energetica S / A ( Baasha ) also includes the U.S. aluminum producer Alcoa.

The shut-off is a CFR dam, a rockfill dam with a concrete seal on the water side. With 185 meters height, it is the third highest dam in Brazil and opening one of the largest CFR dams of the earth.
