Bartolomeo Borghesi

Bartolomeo Borghesi Graf ( born July 11, 1781 Savignano sul Rubicon, † April 16, 1860 in San Marino ) was an Italian epigraphists.

Borghesi studied in Ravenna, later in Bologna. Borghesi in 1801 went to Rome and began studying law there.

To his passion, numismatics, Borghesi created a scientific canon. He was also a member of many scientific academies of Europe. The Accademia della Crusca in Florence, he was a member since 1832.

1821 Borghesi moved his residence to San Marino and began with the publication of Osservazioni numismatiche, a complete work of seventeen decades with 170 articles that deal with the coinage in the Roman Republic. This work has been in the numismatic world today a very high importance. 1838 Bartolomeo Borghesi was sent as a representative of the Republic of San Marino for the coronation of the Emperor of Austria to Milan. In 1842 he was admitted as a member of the Prussian Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts.

One of his students was the epigraphists and archaeologist Adolphe Noël des Vergers.

In 2004, the Republic of San Marino Bartolomeo Borghesi dedicated a 2- euro commemorative coin and a silver commemorative coin to 5 euros.
