Basilica of San Lorenzo, Milan

The Basilica of San Lorenzo (Italian: Chiesa di San Lorenzo Maggiore) is an early Christian church in the Italian city of Milan, which is dedicated to St. Lawrence. It was built in 372-402, and in spite of transformations from the 16th century still shows the original Byzantine structure as a central structure with a dome and four towers, similar to the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul.

Besides the main building, some chapels were erected, including the octagonal chapel of St. Aquilino ( Cappella di Sant'Aquilino ) from the 5th century, the holy Aquilinus of Milan († 1015) was dedicated to and contains valuable mosaics.

In the square outside the church there is a portico with the so-called " Colonne di San Lorenzo ", one of the few remains from the time of the Roman Mediolanum.

Equipment

The great organ in the apse was built in 1870 by organ builder Pietro Bernasconi ( Milan ). In the instrument pipe material was reused in 1840 by the organ builder Felice Bossi ( Bergamo) was built, which in turn contained pipe material from previous instruments. The purely mechanical instrument has three manual divisions ( Grand'Organo, Organo Secondo Concerto ), playable from two manuals and pedal.
