Bass (Instrument)

With the word bass is taken fachsprachlich strictly in music nothing called a sound or voice (bass ( voice )) ( as tenor, baritone, alto or soprano). Colloquially, the term is, however, usually used as a synonym for different instruments of this pitch, that is, those instruments, which take over the bass line in a group of musicians. The bass as a particular instrument does not exist. In common parlance, however, are so - marked by the modern popular music (jazz, rock, pop ) - usually meant instruments that are related to the double bass ( electric bass, acoustic bass guitar ). In different musical environments, however, other instruments such as the tuba, are referred to in the brass than bass. Even singer with the vocal bass are so named.

Bassist

As a " bass player " is referred to in the instrumental area those musicians who play any of the foregoing. While the importance of the bass player in the classical mostly focused on the generation of harmonic basis, the bassist in jazz as well as pop and rock music in addition to the supporting role in the rhythm section is also a soloist.

Bass instruments

As " bass instrument " refers to a musical instrument, if it

  • Generally sounds in a low register and in a musical event the bass line takes over, for example, cello, electric bass, double bass, bassoon, tuba, or if it
  • Represents the most profound example of a family of instruments, such as bass trombone, bass guitar, bass flute, great bass violin (double bass). Possible are extended and varied prefixes such as " sub-bass ", " bass ", " Contra " for instruments that have been building more than in deeper layers.
  • Also in the family of the Steel Pan ( Idiophone ) there are alongside tenor, alto and baritone instruments, of course, the bass.
