Bathurst Island (Northern Territory)

Bathurst Iceland is an Australian island just off the northern coast of the Northern Territory.

It is 2100 km ² and belongs beside Melville Iceland to the group of Tiwi Islands.

The island name is reminiscent of Count Henry Bathurst, after the eponymous Canadian Bathurst Island Iceland is also named. The largest settlement on the island Nguiu located in the southeast, has 1450 inhabitants and is about 70 km from Darwin.

On the southeast tip lies the Aborigines Siedlungsgemeinschaft Wurrumiyanga. It is equipped with the 1300 population of Biggest in place on the island.
