Wurrumiyanga

Wurrumiyanga (formerly called Nguiu ) is a settlement Aboriginal community on the southeast tip of Bathurst Iceland in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is the largest town on the island with about 1,500 inhabitants.

Accessibility

The island is part of the Tiwi Islands and is located in the Arafura Sea. The location on Bathurst Iceland is separated from mainland Australia by the Apsley Strait and removed about 80 kilometers from Darwin. He can be reached by aircraft at about a kilometer away from the airport or by boat. An access is possible only with permission.

History

Nguiu was founded in 1911 as a Catholic Aboriginal mission of Francis Xavier Gsell.

The Nguiu post office was opened on 3 June 1974 Bathurst Iceland; it was the first on the island.

Today

2010 Nguiu was rededicated by the Tiwi Land Council in Wurrumiyanga, which means the place on the bread cycads grow (English: the place where the cycads grow ).

The settlement has sport facilities are like a football stadium, basketball court and swimming pool, a Catholic school, a health center and supermarket.
