Batiste

As Batiste (French) a very feinfädriger, tightly woven lightweight fabric is called, which can be woven mostly from cotton, but partly also from chemical fiber, linen, silk or viscose.

It was named possibly after Leinweber Jean Baptiste of Cambrai, perhaps developed such a cloth according to tradition, was the first in the 13th century. Other claims to the name Batiste has been borrowed from the Indian word for white calico BAFTAs. In English it means the fabric cambric, after Cambrai.

The Madapolam is a qualitatively comparable material.
