Batna (Arabic باتنة, DMG Batna ) is a town in northeastern Algeria with about 292 943 inhabitants ( 2008). It is located in the eponymous province of Batna, whose capital it is. About 40 kilometers to the east lie the World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO ruins of Timgad.

The city has a university ( Université de Batna ).

History

1844 France established there a military base to control the area between the Sahara and the Atlas mountains. A few years later, in 1848, people settled near the base. The newly founded town was called Nouvelle Lambese. A year later they renamed it to Batna.
