Batticaloa

Batticaloa ( Tamil: மட்டக்களப்பு, Sinhala: මඩකලපුව ) is the capital of the eponymous district in the east of Sri Lanka and lies on the Gulf of Bengal. The name means in Sinhalese " muddy lagoon ".

History

The earliest historical artifacts are a Dagaba and Chatra from the Ruhuna kingdom of King Kavantissa ( 1st century BC), which were found in the Dutch fort ( built in the seventeenth century). In this area many archaeological sites have been found dating back to pre-Christian times. Lankavihara, Roththa (Roth Thai ) temple Kinnaragala, Rahathgala ( Shanthamalai ) Veheragalkanda ( Pulukunai ) Eluvamulla ( Pullumuilai ) and Taaththon Kovil, are some of the sites that have been proven by archaeological research. The fortress was built in Batticaloa in 1628 by the Portuguese and was the first that was taken by the Dutch ( 18 May 1638). It is one of the most picturesque of the small Dutch forts of Sri Lanka, situated on an island and is still in good condition. Near Batticaloa the Portuguese had a tiny fort at Tanavare ( They can be found on a map, but it found no vestige of it. ) The Buddhist Dagaba from the first century AD, is located within the Dutch fortress. Batticaloa was later further developed by British; it services rendered during the period of British rule in Sri Lanka. In the 20th century it became an important administrative center and capital of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.

Located off the east coast of Sri Lanka City has many beaches and many small ports. Also known for its unique species of fish, which are called "Singing Fish " because they are able to produce a melody. Batticaloa has a broad agricultural, fisheries and dairy industry as well as various arts and crafts industries.
