The Battle of Beaugency from 8 to December 10, 1870 between the army group of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg and the French Army of the Loire was a battle of the Franco-German War. Due to the large extension of the fighting, it is also the name Battle of Beaugency - Cravant.

Division of the Army of the Loire to Orleans

After the battle of Orléans, the Loire army had been split into two parts. The corps under the command of General Chanzy retreated towards the southwest and stayed there on the right side of the Loire. These units are now referred to as second Army of the Loire. In this retreat, there were many small skirmishes between the Prussian, Bavarian and French units. After successes in smaller meetings on 6 and 7 December that went XIII. Corps under the command of Grand Duke on the right side of the Loire before reaching there on December 7, Beaugency. For this advance units of the X Corps had been called in for reinforcement, while small forces remained as security against the other three Corps (later the Eastern Army ) in Orléans. We did not expect greater resistance and had even been reported after the conquest of Orléans, the Loire army was scattered in all directions and have ceased to exist as an army.

Beaugency to 8 December

In Beaugency, however, the decline in the city of Orléans French units had gathered with the units out of the room and still get Loigy gain by voluntary associations of Tours. Overall, gathered as between Beaugenzy on the Loire and Bina ( about 20 kilometers north-west ) approximately 110,000 French soldiers. The strength of the Prussian units had fallen deployable infantry and cavalry forces low after the previous fights to 27,000. The front of the Prussia in the meantime had a width of about 15 kilometers, but you drew this after the meeting at Meung considerably together.

The Battle of Beaugency

From 8 to 10 December, then came in and around Beaugency heavy fighting in which French vorgingen again and again to the attack. In particular, an attack of the XVI. Corps on December 8, under Rear Admiral Jauréguiberry brought the Prussians in considerable distress. Just because the left wing French ( XXIst Corps ) did not attack and the ability to encircle the right wing with the Bavarian Corps did not use, this could hold. In the three days of battle, the Grand Duke had set up in march all available troops, including the security troops in Orléans to Beaugency, to strengthen its units. Specifically, on December 10, then both sides tried to beat their opponents with their own attacks. The Prussians even tried doing a perimeter of the triple- superior enemy. All attacks were unsuccessful, however, even if the French were able to achieve some initial success in their attacks.

Termination of the battle on 10 December

The attacks by 10 December had brought no decisive victory for both sides. At the same time, however, had the IX. Corps under General Manstein, which had taken place on the left side of the Loire, crossed the Loire in Blois and thus stood in the back of the Loire army. In this situation existed for the French, the danger of being trapped, and General Chanzy, therefore, ordered a retreat across Vendôme to Le Mans. The pursuit by the Prussians was driven only to Vendôme, the supply lines were overextended and our own forces very struck. In Vendôme the German forces remained nearly a month until the Battle of Le Mans.
