Battle of Camerinum

The Battle of Camerinum took place in 295 BC during the Third Samnitenkrieges near present-day Camerino on the eastern slopes of the Apennines instead.

Course

According to the tradition of Livy, Quintus Fabius, the newly elected Consul Maximus Rullianus took over in winter 295 BC the army of Appius Claudius Caecus, which was located in a fortified camp near the geographically unknown location Aharna, and moved on to this Clusium. However, it is scientifically proven that this is not about Clusium, but Camerinum. Especially at the beginning of the campaign season returns Fabius back to deliberations to Rome, leaving the military command of the propraetor Scipio barbatus. This is defeated, according to Livy, along with a whole legion of the senones. In another variation, the reported Livy, it is said to have acted to Umbrians, who were only achieved a small success against the Romans, and again beaten shortly afterwards by the Romans. Even the Greek historian Polybius just of the battle. For the attackers it should have, however, acted according to him, a Samnite - Gallic army, which killed many Romans at the battle.

Historicity

The fact that a battle took place, is - also because of the mention in Polybius - undisputed. However, it is assumed in the research, that Fabius should not be returned to Rome. He and perhaps also his colleague Publius Decius Mus should have held the military command during the battle.
