Battle of Cumae

The Battle of Cumae was a naval battle in 474 BC between the fleets of Syracuse and Cumae ( Cuma Latinized ) on the one hand and the Etruscans on the other.

Hiero I of Syracuse allied with Aristodemus, tyrant of Cumae, to counter the expansion of the Etruscans to southern Italy. 474 BC, they met in the Gulf of Naples to the Etruscan fleet. After their defeat the Etruscans largely lost its political influence in Italy: the loss of naval supremacy was followed over time, the takeover of their territories by the Roman Republic, the Samnites and the Gauls.
