(Also called Battle of the Chamberlain's Bed ) The Battle of Dinwiddie Court House was a battle of Appomattox campaign during the Civil War and was the decisive battle at Five Forks immediately ahead.

On March 29, 1865 Major General Philip Sheridan tried to deal with the cavalry corps, the II and V Corps of the Potomac Army General Robert Edward Lee's right flank positions at Petersburg. Resistant rain turned the road surfaces in mud and slowed the advance of the Union troops, so that its vanguard on March 31, north and northwest of Dinwiddie Court House, met with Major General WHF Lee's cavalry and Major General George Pickett's infantry division. The Confederate troops threw the battle line of the Union forces back to a narrow circle around the village and brought Sheridan's advance to a halt. The approach of Union infantry from the east led Pickett to retire before dawn and to entrench themselves at the major road junction at Five Forks. General Lee ordered Pickett this new position under all circumstances to hold. As a result, it was there again to battle.
