The Battle of Lovech ( Bulgarian Битка при Ловеч ) was a Russian - Ottoman war slaughters of 1877-1878. It took place during the Great Siege of Pleven. Russian units were able to capture the fortress of Lovech successful and so interrupt the main supply and Ottoman reporting channel to Pleven.

In July 1877, shortly after the beginning of the siege of Pleven, the Ottoman commander Osman Pasha received 15 battalions of reinforcements from Sofia. He used these troops to strengthen the fortifications of Lovech, which lies on the path between Orchanie and Pleven.

After two unsuccessful assaults on Pleven Russian Army leadership had changed their tactics and began the siege of the city. The besieging army consisted of about 100,000 soldiers. In order to prevent the Ottoman supply, so was the Russian General Imeretinski with 25 battalions of infantry, 15 Kosakenschwadronen and 98 cannons, a total of around 22,000 men, sent to Lovech.

On September 1, 1877, the Russian generals Alexander Imerentinsky, Skobeliov and Vladimir Dobrovolsky met with approximately 27,000 soldiers from Lovech to attack. The attack was prepared by the firing of grenades 4883. Osman Pasha marched on September 3, with 20 battalions from Pleven to support his troops in Lovech. However, he reached the city after the fall to the Russians. He could only catch the fleeing troops out of the city, thus reinforcing his own powers to three battalions. Osman Pasha reached as 30,000 men, the highest strength he had ever available. The Russians improved their siege ring around Pleven and without power, the fate of the Ottoman occupation was sealed. However, it should still take from three months to their task. It was followed by the Battle of Dolni - Dubník.
