The Battle of Plovdiv ( Turkish Filibe Muharebesi ) was one of the last battles in the Russo- Ottoman War ( 1877-1878 ).

After the destruction of the Ottoman army in the Battle of Shipka Pass IV General Gurko moved with his troops against Southern Bulgaria. The last Ottoman fortress on the way to the Ottoman capital Istanbul was Plovdiv with the commander Suleiman Pasha. On January 17, 1878, a squadron of Russian dragoons under Captain Alexander Burago stormed the city. The resistance was strong, but the Russians were in the majority. In order to prevent further Russian advance and a conquest of Istanbul, intervened the major European powers, especially England. The Soviet advance stopped only in the suburb Yeşilköy.

It was followed by the Treaty of San Stefano. After the peace agreement, the new Russian Governor General Alexander Mikhailovich made Dondukov -Korsakov of the Principality of Bulgaria Plovdiv his capital.
