Battle of the Sit River

The Battle of the Sit (Russian Ситская битва or Сражение на реке Сить ) on March 4, 1238 a decisive battle during the Mongol invasion of Russia.

A Mongolian army under Batu Khan struck the river Sit in the western part of present-day Yaroslavl Oblast annihilating the army of the Grand Prince of Vladimir Yuri II, who died in the battle. The Mongols had previously conquered Ryazan, Juris sons beaten at Kolomna and Vladimir and Moscow sacked. In the following weeks Batu's army subjugated more principalities in the north of Kievan Rus, including Tver, Yaroslavl, Pereslawl, Galich, Kostroma and Kozelsk while Smolensk, Novgorod and Pskov were able to prevent an invasion by tribute payments. At the probable site of the battle near the village of Lopatino in Rajon Nekous, about 25 kilometers northwest of Nowy Rajonverwaltungszentrums Nekous, a memorial stele was erected on the left bank of the sit in the place commemorative events every summer.
